Ah, Alliston, the quaint, historic town whose claim to fame for the past century has been potato farming. But in recent years, potatoes have had to take a back seat to an even bigger boom in business – Honda! What was once little more than a hamlet of victorian homes has become one of the ten fastest growing communities in all of Canada. This is mainly thanks to the gigantic Honda plant, which set up shop back in 1986. Since that time, the car-making giant has built two more plants to accommodate the demand for their popular brand of automobile.
A booming economy has also lead to many new subdivisions popping up to house the host of families looking to move into town. But even though Honda has put Alliston on the map in recent times, the town still honours its original root vegetable of success every year – at the Alliston Potato Festival! For well over 40 years now, people flock to the fairgrounds and to Victoria street to celebrate chips, fries, mash and taters. If you attend, you are sure to see Potato Guy grace the streets during the Potato Festival Parade – what a treat!
The Alliston area has also housed many famous people in Canada’s history, including Margaret Atwood, Sir Frederick Banting and Theodore Loblaw (who founded the grocery store chain we have all come to know). Alliston is developing in to a community with both a historic legacy and newer modern amenities, making it a popular choice for those looking to settle down.
The demand for housing in Alliston has lead to many people purchasing older homes with the goal of updating the interior to meet their family’s needs. Others are buying into newly built homes, but are finding (as many do) that the design packages offered to them are both high in cost and low in creativity and flexibility. However with a new home there is also opportunity to gain value by finishing and building out the basement.
